Route

Begin your hike at Same Station, accessible from the local transport hub Hachinohe station (see this page for how to get there).

Your first stop will be the iconic Kabushima Shrine!

Kabushima shrine Michinoku

Nestled atop a small hill surrounded by tranquil sea views, the Kabushima shrine is a sight to behold. For centuries, it's been a spot where local townspeople gather to pray for good luck in their businesses, fishing ventures, and more. Interestingly, the word "kabu" in the shrine's name can mean both "turnip" and "stock" in Japanese, making it a hot destination for those seeking luck in the stock market. The shrine was destroyed in a fire in 2015 but has since reopened.

Kabushima is the only place in Japan that offers a close-up view of the breeding of black-tailed gulls (umineko). Keep an eye out for bird droppings - there are free umbrellas you can borrow at the entrance. If you do get hit by a fecal missile, you are eligible for a free souvenir from the shrine - a small wooden omamori with your name on it (see photo), stating that you will be lucky for one calendar year!

If you visit in mid-May, you're in for a treat - you will likely see a yellow bloom of rapeseed (nanohana) on the island.

A few metres away from Kabushima Shrine is the Michinoku Coastal Trail Trailhead sign. Take a few snaps, and head towards Same Kado, home to a beautiful lighthouse and an enchanting field of wildflowers that bloom in early summer.

Next, make your way to Ashigezaki Viewpoint, a stone lookout offering a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the Tanesashi Coast.

Beyond the viewpoint lies Osuka Beach - the longest beach in northern Tohoku that can be traversed on foot. Designated as one of Japan's top 100 beaches, Osuka Beach is famous for its "squeaky sand" (鳴砂) - the sand is said to be so pure and untouched that it makes a squeaking sound under your feet as you walk. If you’re feeling brave, consider having a quick dip in the ocean too - it’ll leave you feeling thoroughly refreshed.

The trail will lead you towards Cape Tamurazaki, where rocky reefs and steep cliffs await exploration.

Tanesashi Coast

Walk through the grove of hundred-year-old pine trees before reaching the picturesque Tanesashi Natural Lawn—one of the Hachinohe area's highlights.

Here, relax on the lawn, visit the nearby Tanesashi Kaigan Information Center, and grab a coffee at the adjacent cafe.

The Information Center offers some insights into local flora, fauna, and attractions - it’s also one of the official Michinoku Coastal Trail stamp-collecting locations in case you have your Hiking Passport.

After that, ascend to the Takaiwa Viewpoint—the highest viewpoint along Tanesashi Coast—and marvel at the surrounding sea views, beaches, villages, and mountains.

Finally, head onwards toward Okuki Station—a fitting end to a pleasant day hike - where you can either continue down the beautiful coastline towards Mt. Hashikami, or head back towards Same or Hachinohe stations via public transport.
